Error 0x80070003 pops up when Windows Update components are corrupted.

Here is a surprisingly effective method to deal with it.

 

Step # 1: Stop Windows Update Service

Windows Update administers the distribution of various system updates, bug-fixes, hotfixes and patches released for Windows operating system, it’s components and other Microsoft products. Before deleting temporary update installation files, we must stop this service. Files cannot be deleted while they are being used.

  1. Press Windows Key + X; select Run.
  2. Type Services.msc, click OK.
  3. Scroll down the list of services. Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties.
  4. Stop the service by clicking Stop.
  5. Click Apply, and then OK.

 

Step # 2: Delete Temp Update Installation Folder

Windows temporarily stores the files required for update download and installation. A previous failed attempt to download-install updates corrupts these files, which results in the 0x80070003 error.

  1. Press Windows Key + R.
  2. Type the following location:
    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Click OK.
  3. Delete all the folder contents.
  4. Click Back.
  5. Go to Download subfolder.
  6. Delete all folder contents.

 

Step # 3: Restart the Service

After successfully deleting the files, restart Windows Update.

  1. Open Services window.
  2. Right-click Windows Update, select Properties.
  3. Restart the service by clicking Start | OK.
  4. Exit the window, reboot your computer.
