Problem Backing-up your Files

Do Not Select Default Backup Configs

While creating a new backup do not select the default configuration settings. When you’re prompted to let Windows choose the best options for you, select “Let me choose”, and then add custom folders/ drives. You may also want to specify a day and time to add new backups according to your specified schedule.

Delete Junctions/ Reparse Points

File Systems are of different types. NTFS and FAT32 are the most widely used ones on the Windows platform. Simply put, a Reparse Point or a Junction is a file system object found in NTFS file systems. Microsoft itself has reserved many identity specific tags to help with applications, files or directories for their own use. Other Non-Microsoft applications use Reparse Points as well.

Unfortunately, the existing reparse points some kind of links that redirect to a folder cannot be backed up.

We can delete them as follows:

  1. Open elevated Command Prompt. [Press Windows Key + X; choose Command Prompt (Run as administrator)].
  2. Execute the following command:
  • DIR /AL /S
  1. Now you should see a bunch of text on the screen along with some paths referred to as Junctions. These are your Reparse Points.
  2. Select those paths using your cursor and then copy them to Clipboard.
  3. Open File Explorer. Paste the Reparse Points into the Address Bar on top and press ENTER.
  4. The specified directory will open up.
  5. Move that folder to Recycle Bin. Initiate the backup/ restore process once again.

Problem Restoring your Backups

The restore process sometimes aborts with an error stating that “A file cannot be restored.” You’ll be prompted to skip that file or all corresponding files encountering that error or abort the entire restoration process.

Simply create a new directory as pointed out in the error dialog. The folder name and path must match with the corresponding directory.

Check Drive for Errors

Are you trying to restore backups from an external drive? Perhaps your drive is corrupt or it disconnects too often that ultimately results in the failure of the restoration process. Check the health of your drive as follows:

  1. Open This PC.
  2. Right-click the drive containing your stored backups.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open the Tools tab.
  5. Click the Check button | Scan Drive.
