Devices and Printers Lag and Slow to Open in Windows 10

A printing job can be extremely time consuming. Many people assume since documents and photos take longer time to print, it has something to do with a hardware issue and it is essential to replace

what they call a “faulty printer”. However, fortunately, you don’t need to buy a costly printer to enjoy quicker printing. There are some software aspects that too determine the printing speed. Let us briefly look at each of these factors.

Optimize Windows 10

You may be aware that a number of computer services keep on running in the background while you’re performing your computing tasks. Some of them are not always required. For instance, if you’re not using the Computer Browser you can stop its corresponding service temporarily. There are many such services which can be stopped to gain an unfair speed advantage. Using a holistic PC optimization utility such as the RegInOut System Utilities you can optimize services, fix Registry issues and make your printer run fast. Download it here:

Set Plain Paper Type

A fly-out menu in the Print dialog box sets up printing options for best quality depending on the color weight; dull, uncoated or matte text. To optimize the printing performance, set the paper quality to plain.

  1. Open the Print dialog box.
  2. Select your active printer, click Properties or Preferences button.
  3. Set the Media Type to Plain Paper.
  4. Click Print.

Set Printer Defaults

Printer defaults set up default margins, colors, paper orientation, print quality, paper size, intensity, orientation, layout, duplex, and a host of other settings.

  1. Repeat steps # 1-3 from the Set Plain Printer Type section.
  2. Click Defaults button under Quick Setup, Main and Page Setup.
  3. Finally, click OK.

Disable Antivirus

Your Antivirus may be using a significantly high amount of system resources for its on-going security scan in the background. The real-time scan feature monitors active processes and files to detect malware and protect your computer.

  1. Click the upward arrow on the far-right corner of the Taskbar.
  2. Right-click Kaspersky Internet Security or any other Antivirus you use.
  3. Choose Pause Protection.
  4. Select a time period, click Pause Protection button.

Connect Printer with a High-Speed USB Port

USB Ports are classified on their ability to handle data transfer speed. USB 3.0 can transfer data at 60 Mbps while USB 2.0 and 1.1 transfer data at a relatively slower rate. Since your printer is connected to the computer using a USB cable it is better to connect it using a high-speed USB port.

Do Not Establish Over-the-Cloud Printer Connection

A Printer Hub enables connecting your printer to a small server for conveniently printing over-the-cloud. It uses a Print Server to establish the connection. Do not connect the printer to a hub and rather establish a direct connection.

Compromise Printing Quality

Lower quality prints take less time to be printed and are quite readable. Inkjet cartridge printers can work efficiently with the draft quality. Configure the lowest and readable printing quality depending on your printer type.

  1. Refer to steps # 1-2 under Set Plain Paper Type section.
  2. Select Print Quality to Fast.
  3. Click OK.

Convert PDF to .docx

A Portable Document Format (PDF) file takes relatively long to process and print compared to Microsoft Office Word Document (.docx and .doc) and other formats. You can shorten the time it takes for the document to be actually printed by converting the PDF Document into a Word document. Click File | Save As and choose the relevant format. You can, alternatively use the Export feature too.
