Destiny 2 is Crashing and Running Slow

Destiny 2 finally made its way onto the PC platform a few months back.

Even though by far and large it has been very successful in meeting the expectations of game buffs who were anxiously looking forward to it, it suffers from the most commonly found plague of bugs that cause it to crash abruptly or run painfully slow. These issues have meant the users have nowhere been able to make the most of Destiny 2 as they (and the developers) wanted.

Worry not. We’re here to help you put a fullstop to Destiny 2 crashes and/ or running very slow issues from this very moment. And we will help you achieve that in the next few minutes. Here are some ways you can improve Destiny 2 gameplay. Before attempting to apply these fixes, make sure Windows, Graphics drivers and the game itself are up-to-date. Next, consider some game optimizing. This process entails optimizing your computer’s settings to result in the best possible gaming experience for you (based on the computer’s specifications). Hence look no further than the Game Boost feature of RegInOut System Utilities.

Fix Destiny 2 Crash and Slowdown

RegInOut follows Google Software Principles

Disable Any Overlay Software

One of the most popular reasons behind Destiny 2 crashing is due to overlay in software programs and background applications. Exit the game along with the Battle.net app and shut down any unnecessary background applications including Steam, Geforce Experience (Shadowplay), AMD Gaming Evolved, MSI Afterburner as well as any antivirus software and speed boosting app. If you’re using a video recorder or any software to use screenshots, turn them off as well and then relaunch the game through Battle.net. If Destiny 2 still crashes or runs slow, open Task Manager and terminate all unnecessary applications.

Delete Destiny 2 CVARS.xml

This method comes directly from Destin 2 user forums. Deleting the CVARS.xml file should help fix Destiny 2 crashes for you. Keep in mind, the CVARS.xml file is responsible for storing the settings for the game so all your settings and key bindings will be reset after you delete the file. Enable View Hidden Items from the window ribbon and then make your way to the following directory:
C:\Users\%username%\Appdata\Roaming\Bungie\DestinyPC\prefs\

Simply delete the CVARS.xml file and then relaunch the game and see how the game performs now.

Run Destiny 2 as Administrator

Another reason for Destiny 2 crashes could be due to it not having sufficient privileges to access system files or resources. Running the game in Administrator mode has reportedly helped many players run the game without any issues. Follow these steps to run Destiny 2 in Administrator mode:

  1. Make your way to the game’s directory.
  2. Right-click and open the properties of the file named Destiny2.exe.
  3. Go to the Compatibility tab and then select the checkbox for Run this program as administrator.
  4. Save the changes by clicking OK.
  5. Now repeat these steps for Destiny 2 Launcher.exe file.
  6. Run the game from Battle.net app.
  7. When you’re prompted for it, give your consent to provide Administrative privileges to the game.

Turn Off Overclocking

If you’re overclocking your CPU or GPU it’s highly recommended that you disable overclocking while playing Destiny 2. Many users who regularly overclock their systems have reported that Destiny 2 crashes simply disappeared once they disabled overclocking. If you use a modern-day PC, then the BIOS setting should be pretty straightforward. Considering that most PC’s come with overclocking disabled, if you haven’t enabled it on your own then overclocking should not be the problem.
