Canon Printer is Not Responding or Running Slow

Canon is one of the best silent printers available nowadays for home use. It is renowned for working flawlessly.

It also comes with Wi-Fi so the user can print over the network. However, some users have reported that Canon printer stops responding in the midst of the printing job. Also, at times it tends to be painfully slow in processing a printing command.

We’ve discovered a few effective tweaks that will help in fixing the issues we mentioned above. So let’s jump right into the solution to fix the mess.

Solution 1: Cancel All Printing Jobs

First of all, make sure that all the cables are properly connected and that the printer is turned on. Now move to the Control Panel and choose View devices and printers. Now make sure that the printer you’re trying to use is set to be the default printer. If this isn’t the case, right-click the printer and select Select as default printer.

Right-click the printer once again and select Printer properties (note this option is different from Properties).

Now click the Ports tab and make sure that all ports are deselected. Click OK to apply any changes you’ve made.

Click the printer icon in the taskbar to see the number of jobs in the queue. Cancel all of them and then try printing again one by one.

Solution 2: Print in Draft Mode

Some users say that printing in draft mode (normal mode) is sometimes faster than the (high-quality mode.) But this decreases the quality of resolution.

For routine office usage, the normal mode works fine. However, for formal reports, you would want the high-quality prints instead.

To print in draft mode

  1. Open Printer properties as outlined in the last solution.
  2. You will find either the Print Quality tab or Draft or Fast. Open whichever tab you can locate.
  3. Select Draft and now select the checkbox that says Always print with current settings.
  4. Click OK.

Solution 3: Disable Automatic Duplexing

Duplexing means the printer will print on both sides of the paper. This type of printing takes more time because the printer rotates the paper and then prints it on the backside. But, if you want to improve the speed of printing then you must disable automatic duplexing.

  1. Open Printer properties once again.
  2. Click the Device Settings tab.
  3. Now uncheck the checkbox for Allow Manual Duplexing.
  4. Click OK.

Please note, not all printer devices are equipped with the auto-duplexing option.

Solution 4: Remove Other Printers and Change USB Port

Some users have reported that by disabling other printers connected to the computer, they were able to speed-up the printing. Also, there are reports that changing the USB port helps speed up printing as well as do away with any ‘printing job freeze’ issues as well.

  1. Navigate to Control Panel | Devices and Printers.
  2. Select the printer you’re currently using as the default one.
  3. Now remove any existing printers that aren’t in use.
  4. Open Printer properties | Ports tab and check if the correct port is selected.
  5. If it isn’t, select the correct port and click OK.

Also, ensure that no jobs are left in the queue. If they are, cancel all of them.

Solution 5: Check Wireless Connection Problems

Canon printers often don’t work well if the signal strength of the wireless router attached to them is poor. Ethernet connections are considered more powerful than Wi-Fi connections. Slow network speed can become quite a hurdle if the printer is placed far from the actual position. To fix this:

  1. Check the strength of the router.
  2. Place the printer near the router and retry printing.
  3. Connect an Ethernet cord to the printer from the router for better connectivity.

Solution 6: Use Genuine Canon Ink Cartridges

Most printers are programmed to work only with genuine cartridges. They will stop printing/ print improperly if the user tries to use a low quality/ fake ink cartridge. The genuine ink cartridges contain a code that verifies their compatibility. If your printer has stopped printing, check if the cartridge you’re using is original. You can get the original ones from authorized Canon shops or from its e-commerce store.

Solution 7: Is the Quiet Mode Turned On?

In the Quiet Mode, the printer prints very slowly so as not to create any noise. The arm of the printer moves much slower than the normal mode and thus it slows down the printing speed. To make it faster again:

  1. Open Printer properties.
  2. Go to Maintenance and select Quiet Mode.
  3. Select Do not use quiet mode works. You can also opt to set your desired timeframe between which Quiet Mode will automatically be switched on.
  4. Click Send.
  5. You will get a confirmation message in a few seconds. Just click OK and you are done.

Solution 8: Reinstall Printer Driver or Update it

Sometimes the actual culprit is either an outdated printer driver or an error in the currently installed driver is causing all the mess. So you should simply reinstall the driver.

  1. Open Control Panel and select View devices and printers.
  2. Now right-click the printer and select Remove device.
  3. Reboot your computer. Once it boots up to the desktop, it will show up a notification for a new hardware and install the driver for it.
  4. If this doesn’t happen, you can simply go to Control Panel | Devices and Printers and click on Add a device from the top bar.
  5. Windows will now initiate a wizard to install the printer’s driver.

Solution 9: Is the Cable Faulty?

There may be a faulty cable that is causing these issues (if it isn’t wireless.) If this is the case indeed, replace the cable.
