Defragment the Hard Disk

File fragmentation is called the process of dividing a single file into multiple parts. That is, a file is not continuously stored on your disk and thus slows down the process of retrieving its contents. That’s why your computer runs slow.

To speed up computer, you need to defragment all the drives on your hard disk. Here are the steps to do so

  • Click Start button on the Taskbar.
  • Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter.
  • Disk Defragmenter will launch on your screen.
  • Select the drives that you wish to defragment.
  • After selecting, click Defragment disks button to start the actual process.
 

Please note that this process may take a longer time depending on the level of fragmentation. It is also advisable to not open other programs while this process is continued.

Defragment the System Registry

We had seen how the hard disk is fragmented. Likewise, Windows Registry is too fragmented due to the continuous access by your operating system and installed software applications. It slows down the process of retrieving the registry values and thus your computer runs slow and starts freezing.

Do below steps to defragment the registry and considerably speed up your computer:

First of all download a PC Optimizer software that includes the Registry Defragmenter feature.

  • Install and run it.
  • Close all other programs before continuing.

  • Click Analyze button.
  • The registry analyze process may take some time to complete. After it is completed, click
  • Defragment button to start defragmenting the registry.
  • When you are prompted to reboot the system, click appropriate buttons.
 

Clean the Temporary Stuff and Browser Cache

By the term ‘temporary stuff’ means the various types of unnecessary files and stuff stored on your computer. For example, temporary files extracted by setup programs, temporary internet files, log files and so on.

These files not only allocate a large amount of your disk space but also make your computer slow. To speed up computer, clean the temporary stuff and browser cache as shown below:

Clean Temporary Stuff

  • Click Start..
  • Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk CleanUp.
  • Select a drive, such as, drive C.
  • Press ENTER.
  • Follow the on screen instructions.
 

Clean Browser Cache and Internet History

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete.
  • Mark the items as checked which you would like to delete.
  • lick Delete button.
 

Remove Obsolete Registry Entries

Windows Registry may contain various entries referring to dead paths. These broken registry entries may cause your computer to run slow or freeze. To speed up computer , remove the obsolete registry entries using a good and reputed Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software.

  • Download, install and run a Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software.
  • Click Registry Cleaner tab.
  • Click Start Scan button to start scanning for the broken registry entries.
  • After the scan is completed, click Fix Now button to perform repair.
 

Note: Any accidental change in the registry may damage your operating system or stored documents. That is why be very careful while choosing a registry cleaning and PC optimization software and always make registry backup before making any change.

Disable Startup Programs & Services

After successfully booting up your operating system, many programs and services may run in background without your knowledge. Most of them may be unnecessary.

A large number of startup and services cause your computer to run slow. That is why; disable the startup and services entries that are not important for you to speed up computer.

  • Click Start.
  • Type MsConfig in the Search box.
  • Press ENTER.
  • Click Startup tab, and disable the unnecessary entries.
  • Click Apply.
  • Click Services tab, and check up the box Hide all Microsoft services.
  • Again, disable the unnecessary entries.
  • Click Apply | OK.

Restart the machine when prompted.

 

Customize Windows for Best Performance

Microsoft Windows enables you to customize it for best performance or best appearance. To speed up computer, customize its settings for best performance rather than for best appearance. Windows will then disable the features that cause your computer to run slow.

  • Click Start.
  • Right click Computer icon.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click Advanced System Settings link at the left hand side on the window.
  • In the Advanced tab and Performance frame, click Settings.
  • Under Visual Effects tab, select the option Adjust for best performance.
  • Click Apply | OK | OK.

Restart the machine when prompted.

Uninstall Programs and Disable Windows Features

Installing too many programs and enabling the unwanted Windows Features may slow down your computer. To speed up computer, uninstall the unwanted programs and disable the Windows Features that you no longer need.

Uninstall Programs

  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
  • Select a program and click Uninstall button.
  • Follow the wizard and restart your computer.
  • Do the same for other unneeded programs.
 

Disable Windows Features

  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • lick Programs | Turn Windows Features On or Off.
  • Uncheck the features that you no longer use.
  • Click OK to start removing them.
