Step-by-Step Guide (Windows 10, 8, Windows 7, Vista and XP)

Google Chrome displays profile error due to its inability to load user profile. An error appears saying "Your profile could not be opened correctly". The browser loads with limited features. Some user account related features would not work.

 
  • Delete Default User Data
  • Disable Sandbox Mode
  • Remove Ad-Filtering Applications
  • Repair Chrome Settings
  • Block Third Party Extensions
 

Delete Default User Data

The user data is located in the Local application data directory. It contains configurations and settings which are retrieved during browser load interval. Delete the default user data so that Google Chrome profile error will be fixed. Chrome will re-create new user data with default settings.

 

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

 
  • Close Google Chrome in case it is already open.
  • Click the Start button, select All Programs | Accessories | Run.
  • Run box opens. Type "AppData" and press ENTER.
  • Open the following folder:
    ...\Local\Google\Chrome\UserData
  • Delete the "Default" folder.
  • Google Chrome will recreate the folder the next time you restart the browser.
 

For Windows 8:

 

To open Run box in Windows 8, simply press Windows Key + R after closing Chrome. The remaining steps remain the same.

 

Disable Sandbox Mode

Sandbox mode can cause Chrome profile error. Disable it to prevent temporary suspension of some of the Chrome features.

 

For Windows 8 and Earlier Versions:

 
  • Right click Google Chrome desktop shortcut.
  • Select Properties.
  • Click the Shortcut tab, add following command at the end of the Target textbox: --no-sandbox
  • Click Apply | OK.
 

Remove Ad-Filtering Applications

Ad-filtering applications are used to prevent advertisements. Remove ad-filtering applications to avoid conflicts.

 

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

 
  • Click the Start button.
  • Click Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a Program.
  • Select ad-filtering application and then click Uninstall button.
  • Follow the wizard your own.
 

For Windows 8:

 
  • Press the Windows Key.
  • Type "Uninstall a program" in the Search Box.
  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Open program uninstall page and remove ad-filter application.

Block Third Party Extensions

Third party extensions, also called as add-ons, can cause Chrome Profile Error. Block them as shown below:

  • Click the Wrench icon.
  • Click Tools | Extensions.
  • Block all third party extensions displayed.
