How to Speed Up Windows 7

Many users complain that Windows 7 is much slower than its earlier versions in a sense that it requires the advanced hardware to run on it. Their computer runs slow and even freezes when they are doing work, playing computer games, listening music or doing some other task. 1.Reset your Web Browser


Resetting your web browser to the original settings may help speed up Windows 7. This will disable third party add-ons, toolbars and other browser extensions that slow down the surfing performance.

Reset your web browser as shown below:

  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click Tools | Internet Options.
  • Click Advanced tab.
  • Under the Reset Internet Explorer Settings frame, click Reset button.
  • In the new dialog, mark the box Delete Personal Settings as checked.
  • Click Reset button.

2.Clean Registry Junk


Registry junk refers to the registry entries that are remaining though the original source (file/ path) is destroyed or broken. Junk causes Windows 7 to run slow. To speed up Windows 7, clean the registry using a good and efficient Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer.

3. Index the Files for Quick Search


The Search Index feature helps optimizing the computer search by indexing the files on your computer. To speed up the file search and thereby speed up your computer, add the available drives to the list of drives to be indexed.

  • Click Modify button.
  • Click Show all locations button.
  • Mark all the drives as checked up.

4. Index your Computer and Add Hardware based on the Test Results


Windows Experience Index rates up your computer. You can add appropriate hardware based on the search results.


  • Click Start.
  • Press ENTER.
  • Windows Experience Index will launch.
  • Click Rate this computer button to start conducting the tests.
  • After these tests are completed, you can get the overall performance results.
  • ou are advised to add new hardware based on the search results. For example, upgrade your processor, add more RAM and add a Graphics Card.

5. Change Theme to Windows Classic and Remove Desktop Wallpaper.


To speed up Windows 7, change the theme to Windows Classic and remove the desktop background picture.


Change Theme to Windows Classic

  • Right click your Desktop.
  • Select Personalize.
  • Select a theme.

  • Remove the Desktop Wallpaper


  • Right click your Desktop.
  • Select Personalize.
  • Click Desktop Wallpaper.
  • Select Solid Colors option from the Picture Location drop down box.
  • Select a solid color like black.
  • Click Save Changes button.
  • Click Close when done.

6. Defragment the Disk and Registry.


Your disk drives and registry may get fragmented due to continuous access. Defragmenting them may speed up Windows 7.


Defragment the Disk

  • Click Start.
  • Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter.
  • Select the drives that you wish to defragment.
  • Click Defragment disks button to begin the task.

Defragment the Registry

  • Download a PC Optimizer software that includes the Registry Defragmenter feature.
  • Click Defragmenter tab.
  • Click Analyze.
  • When the registry analyze process is completed, click Defragment button and restart your computer.

7.Clean the Disk Space


Deleting temporary contents on your hard disk may speed up Windows 7. Delete the temporary files, temporary internet files, browser cache, log files, etc as shown below:

  • Click Start.
  • Click All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk CleanUp.
  • Select a drive for cleaning up the temporary files.
  • Press ENTER.

8.Disable Unwanted Programs from Running at Windows Startup

Running too many programs at the Windows startup reduces the system performance. To speed up Windows 7, you have to disable the unwanted third-party programs from running at Windows startup.

Here are the steps to do so:

  • Click Start.
  • Type MsConfig and press ENTER
  • Click Startup tab.
  • Uncheck the entries of the programs that you do not wish to run at system startup.
  • Click Apply.
  • Do the same for the entries in the Services tab.
  • Click Apply, and then OK.
  • Restart the computer when prompted.

9.Turn Off Unnecessary Windows Features


Some features are automatically enabled when you install Microsoft Windows. It may be possible that you do not use all these features. Hence better to disable the unwanted features to speed up Windows 7. Here are the steps to do so:

10.Install Windows Updates

  • Click Start.
  • Click All Programs | Windows Updates.

11.Remove the Programs that you No Longer Use


To speed up Windows 7, uninstall the programs that you no longer use. Do these steps:

  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
